Etymology: In α. forms < eth- (in ethyl n.) + chloro- comb. form² + vyn-, of uncertain origin (perhaps a respelling of vin- (in vinyl n.), or perhaps < v- (in vinyl n.) + yn- (in -yne suffix), indicating a triple bond between carbon atoms) + -ol suffix. Subsequently (in β. forms) with remodelling of the medial element after chlor- comb. form².

Pharmacology.

A short-acting sedative and hypnotic drug used as a treatment for insomnia. Cf. Placidyl n.Chemical name: 1-chloro-3-ethyl-1-penten-4-yn-3-ol, C₇H₉ClO.
