Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ōviparus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōviparus egg-laying (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius; < ōvi- ovi- comb. form1 + -parus : see -parous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare viviparous adj. Compare Middle French ovipere (early 16th cent.), French ovipare (1700).In form oviperous probably after Middle French ovipere.
Zoology.
Producing eggs; reproducing by means of eggs which are hatched outside the body of the parent (as in birds); designating this method of reproduction. Cf. viviparous adj., ovoviviparous adj.
