Origin: A borrowing from Panjabi. Etymon: Panjabi misal.
Etymology: < Panjabi misal confederacy < Urdu mis̱l an assemblage of < Persian mis̱l the like of and its etymon Arabic miṯl (noun) equivalent, equal, something or someone of the same kind.
Sikhism. Now historical.
Each of the twelve confederacies of Sikhs in the 18th and 19th centuries, originally organized primarily for military purposes, but subsequently as an administrative division of the Punjab.

1834 H. T. Prinsep Origin Sikh Power in Punjab i. 29 The associations were called Misuls, implying that they were confederacies of equals, under chiefs of their own selection. The chief..was..treated with deference by the inferior Sirdars, but these owned no obligation to obey, beyond what they might consider to be for their own reciprocal benefit, or for the well being of the Misul.
