Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French oliflamble, oriflamme.
Etymology: < Middle French oliflamble (1330), French oriflamme (c1100 in Old French as orie flambe , 12th cent. as oriflanbe , oriflambe , c1300 as oriflan ) < Old French or gold (see or n.1) + flambe flame ( < classical Latin flamma flame n.), with allusion to the device of golden flames on a red background. Compare Old Occitan auriflan, auriflamma (Occitan auriflam), Spanish oriflama (1848; 1431–49 as oriflam), Catalan oriflama (a1342), Italian oriflamma (a1321), post-classical Latin auriflamma (1304), auriflamba (c1595 in a British source), oriflamma (a1347 in a British source).In form loryflam in Middle English with attraction of l from the French definite article. The form oiliflame is probably by association with oily adj.
1. The sacred banner of St Denis, of red or orange-red silk, which from the 12th to the 15th centuries the kings of France used to receive from the abbot of Saint-Denis (north of Paris) on setting out for war. Now historical.
