Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Oreopithecus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Oreopithecus, genus name (P. Gervais 1872, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 74 1217) < post-classical Latin oreo- relating to mountains (see oro- comb. form¹), used here with allusion to the form of the tubercles on the molar teeth + scientific Latin -pithecus (fossil) ape (see Pliopithecus n.). Compare French Oréopithèque (P. Gervais 1872).

Palaeontology.

An extinct ape, Oreopithecus bambolii, known from numerous late Miocene fossil remains found chiefly in Italy, and dated to about eight million years ago. Also: the genus Oreopithecus itself. Oreopithecus, isolated on an island and living in swampy habitats, had anomalous features that make it difficult to classify.
