Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Ossetia , -an suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Ossetia (Russian Osetija , Georgian Oseti : see note), a region of the Central Caucasus partly in Russia and partly in Georgia + -an suffix. Compare French Ossétien (1794 in the passage translated in quot. 1794 at sense A. 1, 1902 in sense A. 2). Compare earlier Ossetin adj. and n. Compare also Ossetan adj. and n., Ossete n. and adj., Ossetic n. and adj.The Georgian place name literally means ‘land of the Os or Ossi ’ (compare quot. 1788 in the etymological note at Ossete n. and adj.) < Os , representing a local pronunciation of As , an ancient name for the people of this region < an Iranian language. The people, whose self-designation is Iron or Digor (depending upon which dialect of the language they speak), are thought to be descended from the Alans (see Alan n. and adj.). In form Osetian after Russian Osetija Ossetia, osetin an Ossetian, osetinskij (adjective) Ossetian (see Ossetin adj. and n.) or Georgian Oseti Ossetia.

A native or inhabitant of Ossetia, a region of the Central Caucasus partly in Russia and partly in Georgia; esp. a member of a people long settled in this area who speak an Iranian language (see sense A. 2). Cf. Ossete n. 1, Ossetin n.The region is divided into the republic of North Ossetia, in Russia's north Caucasian provinces, and South Ossetia, a smaller, isolated area in Georgia (since the 1980s the scene of ethnic unrest; the name is disputed by the inhabitants, who prefer to use ‘Inner Kartli’).
