Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Mongolian. Etymons: Persian urdū; Mongolian ordo.
Etymology: < Persian urdū camp (pronounced ordū ; compare Urdu n.) < Chaghatai ordu royal encampment, royal residence (see horde n.). In later use also (in form ordo) < the ultimately related Mongolian ordo palace, royal encampment (see horde n.). Compare earlier horde n.In the 18th- and 19th-cent. use perhaps also influenced by Ottoman Turkish ordu royal camp, military camp, army (see horde n.).
historical in later use.
Among Mongol and Turkic peoples of Central Asia: a portable encampment used by a nomadic group, typically comprising dwellings, shops, places of worship, etc. Also: such a nomadic group itself, esp. one ruled by a khan and having a military function. Cf. horde n. 1a.
