Etymology: < osteo- comb. form + -clast comb. form. In sense 1 after German Osteoklast (R. A. von Kölliker 1872, in Verhandl. der Physikalisch-Med. Ges. Würzburg 2 243). In sense 2 probably after Italian osteoclaste (1875 or earlier). Compare earlier osteoclasis n.
1. Histology. A multinucleated giant cell of haematopoietic stem cell origin that carries out resorption of bone.
