Etymology: < octo- comb. form + -an suffix, after post-classical Latin octana (1769 R. A. Vogel in W. Cullen Synopsis Nosologiæ Methodicæ III. 162). Compare French octan (1803 in fièvre octane ; compare Middle French octain (16th cent. in Paré in fievre octaine )). Compare huitain n. and also quartan n. and adj., quintan n. and adj.
