Etymology: < Persian basīj (in Basīj-i Mustaẓʿafīn, literally ‘Mobilization of the Oppressed’, the popular name of a volunteer militia in Iran, founded in 1979, and in Nīrū-yi Muqāwamat-i Basīj, literally ‘Mobilization Resistance Force’, the official name of this organization), specific use of basīj preparation for a journey or campaign (common in medieval poetry; revived after 1930 in sense ‘mobilization’ in military contexts, to replace a loanword from Arabic), of uncertain origin.The usual Persian word for a member of the basij is basījī Basiji n.
