Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Oberstleutnant.
Etymology: < German Oberstleutnant (17th cent.) < Oberst colonel ( < oberst , superlative of ober : see over adj.) + Leutnant second lieutenant (see lieutenant n.). Compare earlier Oberleutnant n.The form Oberstlieutenant is probably after a German form (compare German †Lieutenant (18th cent.) lieutenant n., representing a learned spelling after the French).
Military.
In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland: a military title or rank equivalent to a British or U.S. lieutenant colonel and (in the air force) to a Royal Air Force wing commander; a person of this rank.
