Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin noma.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin noma, alteration (probably after the plural nomae ) of classical Latin nomē corroding sore, ulcer (the direct source of the β. forms) < ancient Greek νομή < an ablaut variant of the base of νέμειν to feed, to give what is due, deal, distribute (see nim v.). Compare French †nome , noma (both 1855). In modern use chiefly after R. A. Vogel Definitiones Generum Morborum (1764) 29 (see quot. 1827 at α. ).
Medicine.
A form of gangrene affecting the face, esp. the lips and cheeks, usually caused by a mixed bacterial infection and typically occurring in young children suffering from malnutrition or other disease.
