单词 nomades
释义

nomadesn.

Brit. /ˈnəʊmədiːz/, U.S. /ˈnoʊməˌdiz/
Forms: 1500s– nomades, 1600s numades. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nomades.
Etymology: < classical Latin Nomades, the name of certain nomadic peoples (see note) < ancient Greek Νομάδες , plural of νομαδ- , νομάς nomad n. and adj. In quot. a1544 at sense 1 via Spanish nomades, denoting Scythian nomads (1519 in the source translated, also 1384 as nomados, denoting North African nomads). Compare Italian Nomadi, plural (a1367, also denoting North African nomads). With use to denote Scythian nomads (see quots. a1544, 1578, 1851 at sense 1) compare ancient Greek νομάδες Σκύθαι , classical Latin Scythae Nomades . With use to denote nomads in Arabia (see quot. 1764 at sense 1) compare classical Latin Arabia nomadum ‘Arabia of the nomads’, Hellenistic Greek στρατηγὸς νομάδων ‘general of the nomads’ on an inscription from Arabia. With use to denote North African nomads (see quot. ?1556 at sense 1) compare ancient Greek νομάδες Λίβυες Libyan nomads, and compare Numidian n. and adj. The form Numades (see quot. 1682 at sense 1) is perhaps after Numidian adj. (compare quot. ?1556 at sense 1), though the passage translated has Latin Nomades . N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nǫ·mădīz) /ˈnɒmədiːz/, with short vowel in the first syllable. Compare discussion s.v. nomad n. and adj.
Now rare.
1. Nomadic peoples. Also in extended use. Some examples here may illustrate the plural of nomade and may therefore have a disyllabic pronunciation.
