Etymology: < German Butin (earliest in Butinsäure , lit. ‘acid of butine’; W. Heintz ( Ann. der Physik u. Chem. (1853) 90 151)) < but- (in classical Latin būtyrum butter n.1) + German -in -ine suffix5. N.E.D. (1888) gives the pronunciation as (biū·təin, -īn) /ˈbjuːtaɪn/, /ˈbjuːtiːn/.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
A solid fat present in butter.The composition of this fat is unclear.
