Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obsidēre.
Etymology: < classical Latin obsidēre to surround in a hostile way, to beset, assail, press, to besiege, occupy, possess < ob- ob- prefix + sedēre to sit (see sedent adj.). Compare obsede v., obsess v., and French obsider to surround (1700), variant of obséder obsede v.
Obsolete. rare.
