A type of English pottery made from the late 18th to the early 20th cent., having a white or cream body decorated with coloured bands displaying branching, tree-like patterns. Now also: similar ware made by studio potters.The characteristic dendritic patterns associated with Mocha ware result from the chemical interaction of alkaline slip and a mildly acidic infusion of tobacco. The ware is dried to a leather-hard state and dipped upside down into finely sieved slip. The tobacco infusion (originally made using a mixture of turpentine and urine) is then painted on with swift brushstrokes.
