Origin: A borrowing from Angloromani. Etymon: Angloromani mochadi.
Etymology: < Angloromani (Welsh Romani) mochadi taboo, unclean < Romani maXadi (also as måχadī), feminine of maXado, lit. ‘smeared’ (with reference to menstrual blood) < late Sanskrit mrakṣati (third person singular) smears.The corresponding masculine form mochado in the sense ‘defiled, unclean’ is recorded in Angloromani as mookedo (1863 in B. C. Smart Dial. Eng. Gypsies) and mokkado (1874 in G. Borrow Romano Lavo-Lil, glossed ‘unclean to eat’).
In Romani usage: (of a woman) spiritually and ceremonially unclean; defiled or impure. Cf. marimé adj.
