Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin occupāt- , occupāre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin occupāt-, past participial stem of occupāre occupy v. + -ive suffix. Compare Middle French occupatif drawing attention (1507), post-classical Latin occupativus (13th cent.).With sense 2 compare earlier occupational adj.
1. Characterized by occupying or being occupied; (Law) held by a tenure based on occupation (see occupation n. 1a). Now rare.
