Etymology: < classical Latin abnegāt- past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of abnegāre to refuse, to deny, in post-classical Latin also to renounce (Vetus Latina) < ab- ab- prefix + negāre negate v. Compare earlier abnegation n.
