Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nototherium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Nototherium, genus name (R. Owen 1845, in Rep. Brit. Assoc. Advancem. Sci. 14 232; < ancient Greek νότος south wind, south (see Notus n.) + θηρίον beast), with omission of the ending: see -there comb. form.
Palaeontology. Now rare.
An extinct herbivorous marsupial of the genus Nototherium (family Diprotodontidae), known from Australian fossils of the Pleistocene epoch and resembling a wombat (though larger in size).
