Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rostellum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rostellum (in sense 1a, Linnaeus Philosophia botanica (1751) 54; 1809 or earlier in sense 2a; 1810 or earlier in sense 2b), specific uses of classical Latin rostellum small beak or snout (Pliny) < rostrum beak (see rostrum n.) + -ellum -ellum suffix. In sense 1b after French rostellum (L. C. Richard 1818, in Mém. du Muséum d'Hist. Nat. 4 32).
