Etymology: < nitro- comb. form + benzene n., after French nitrobenzine (1838; 1900 as nitrobenzène ). Compare earlier nitrobenzide n., nitrobenzinic adj.The name nitrobenzoene ( < French nitrobenzoène (1841)) was earlier applied to the substance later called nitrotoluene:1845 Mem. & Proc. Chem. Soc. London 1843–5 2 254 The nitrobenzoene..affords the same decomposition as anthranilic acid.
Chemistry.
A poisonous colourless or yellowish oily liquid, C6H5NO2, with a strong smell of almonds, which is a derivative of benzene having a nitro group attached to the carbon ring and is used chiefly in the manufacture of aniline. Also (in plural): nitro-derivatives of benzene collectively, containing one or more nitro groups.Nitrobenzene was originally called nitrobenzide, and later nitrobenzol.
