Etymology: < ancient Greek ναός temple, inmost part of a temple, shrine, perhaps < ναίειν to dwell, of unknown origin. Compare Mycenaean Greek na-wi-jo (adjective) of shrines.
Esp. in ancient Greece: a temple; the inner cell or sanctuary of a temple.
