1876 J. Stainer & W. A. Barrett Dict. Musical Terms 313/2 Here was a sa for the seventh note of the scale; but..it was not employed. In later use, in order to mark another semitone by the vowel i (as in mi) sa was turned into si.

Etymology: In early use, symbolic abbreviation for silicium n., after use as symbolic abbreviation for scientific Latin silicium silicium n. in the system introduced by Berzelius (see quot. 1814). In later use, symbolic abbreviation for silicon n.
