Etymology: < German Muscularis (A. Kölliker Mikroskop. Anat. (1852) II. 132), use as noun of post-classical Latin muscularis muscular adj., probably after scientific Latin tunica muscularis muscular coat. Compare French tunique musculaire (1803 or earlier), tunique musculeuse, musculeuse (both 1868).In fuller form muscularis externa in sense 1 < scientific Latin muscularis externa < muscularis + externa , feminine of externus outer (see extern adj. and n.). In fuller form muscularis propria in sense 1 < scientific Latin muscularis propria < muscularis + propria , feminine of proprius own, particular (see proper adj., n., and adv.).

Histology and Anatomy.

1. The smooth muscle of the wall of the gastrointestinal tract and other tubular or hollow organs; a layer of such muscle; the tunica media of a muscular artery. More fully muscularis externa, muscularis propria.
