Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: their pron.
Etymology: Alteration of their pron. after mine pron., thine pron. Compare hern pron.1, hern pron.2, his'n pron., ourn pron., yourn pron., and compare also theirs pron.Apparently recorded only in grammars in the 18th cent.:1729 J. Greenwood Ess. Pract. Eng. Gram. (ed. 3) i. xi. 122 Some say theirn for theirs.1795 B. Dearborn Columbian Gram. 139 Improprieties..Theirn for Theirs. Eng. Dial. Dict. records the word widely from the midlands and south of England; Surv. Eng. Dial. likewise records the word from the majority of midland and southern counties, with the exception of Cheshire and Nottinghamshire to the north, Rutland, Norfolk, and Suffolk to the east, and Cornwall to the west. Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. records the word chiefly from New England and southern and south Midland states. Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. also records theirns (pronoun) from North Carolina (20th cent.), and theirs'n (pronoun) from Mississippi (2001); compare theirs pron.
