Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin musca.
Etymology: < classical Latin musca fly (perhaps ultimately related to midge n.); in sense 1 after post-classical Latin Musca (J. B. Riccioli Almagestum Novum (1651) I. i. vi. v. 410/1), itself after corresponding use of Dutch Vlieghe (now Vlieg : see fly n.1), adopted as the name of the constellation by F. de Houtman in Spraeckende Woord-boeck (1603) sig. Ffivv. Compare French mouche (1718 in sense 1; 1691 as mouche indienne).The use of the Latin genitive case form as postmodifier in star names is a practice that originated in post-classical Latin.
Astronomy.
1. (The name of) a small constellation of the southern hemisphere, lying in the Milky Way between the Southern Cross and the south celestial pole; the Fly. Also (in form Muscae) used as postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Mus (without point).Formerly also called Apis, the Bee (Johann Bayer Uranometria (1603)). In early use sometimes called Musca Australis (the Southern Fly) to distinguish it from sense 2.
