Etymology: < blood n. + wood n.1 With sense 1 compare Portuguese pau de sangue (1724 or earlier).
1. Any of various tropical trees having reddish wood or sap; esp. either of two leguminous trees, Gordonia haematoxylon of the West Indies, and the logwood, Haematoxylum campechianum, of Central America and Mexico. Also: the wood of any of these trees.
