Etymology: < scientific Latin Myroxylon, genus name of the tree from which balsam of Peru is obtained (C. Linnaeus filius Supplementum Plantarum Systematis Vegetabilium (1781) 34; < ancient Greek μύρον unguent, perfume (see myronic adj.) + ξύλον wood: see xylo- comb. form) + -ine suffix⁵, after German Myroxylin (W. Richter 1838, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chem. 13 169). Compare French myroxyline (1868 in Littré; earlier miroxile, myroxilon (Boiste, 1803)).The spelling of the headword form in -y- is that of N.E.D. (1908), probably after the Latin form.

1842 J. Pereira Elem. Materia Med. 1561 Richter asserts that oil of balsam of Peru is composed of two distinct oils;—one, called myrospermine, which is soluble in alcohol; the other, termed myroxiline, insoluble in alcohol.
