Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi mañjīṭ.
Etymology: < Hindi mañjīṭ, mañjīṭh < Sanskrit mañjiṣṭha (see munjistin n.).
Now chiefly historical.
The roots of Bengal madder ( Rubia cordifolia) or, occasionally, of certain other Indian plants, used as the source of a red dye; (also) the Bengal madder plant itself.

1846 J. Lindley Veg. Kingdom 770 The roots of Rubia cordifolia..yield the Madder of Bengal, and form even an article of the export commerce to Europe, under the name of Munjeeth.
1849 J. H. Balfour Man. Bot. §905 Among the plants yielding dye, the most interesting is Rubia tinctoria..Rubia Munjista (cordifolia), Munjeet, is also used for a similar purpose.
1861 R. Bentley Man. Bot. ii. iii. 571 The roots of this species, as well as those of M. tinctoria, are used in India and some other parts..for dyeing red. They have been occasionally imported into this country, under the names of Madder, Munjeet, and Chay-root; but such names are improperly applied to them.
1911 Encycl. Brit. XVII. 280/1 Madder.., the root of Rubia tinctorum and perhaps also R. peregrina, both European, R. cordifolia, a native of the hilly districts of India..supplying the Indian madder or manjit.
1947 Thorpe's Dict. Appl. Chem. (ed. 4) VIII. 244/2 The deep red aqueous extract of the ground munjeet is used generally to dye coarse cotton fabrics..various shades of scarlet, coffee brown, or mauve.
