Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French petit mal.
Etymology: < French petit mal (1838 or earlier in this sense) < petit (see petit adj.) + mal mal n. Compare slightly later grand mal n.The French expression is attested earlier in an English context:1842 J. Jackson Inquiry into Nature & Causes of Epilepsy 10 The peculiar giddiness or momentary state of half consciousness, to which epileptics are so liable, is indeed an imperfect seizure, and differs only in degree and duration from the state called catalepsy; it is termed by the French ‘vertige epileptique’ or ‘petit mal’, in contradistinction to the perfect seizure, or ‘grand mal’.
Medicine.
A form of epilepsy characterized by absence seizures (momentary interruptions of consciousness), occasionally with abnormal movements of the eyelids, head, or arms, and occurring chiefly in children. Also: a seizure of this kind. Cf. absence n. 3b.
