Etymology: < Mudville, the name of a fictional town in E. L. Thayer's poem ‘Casey at the Bat’, which features the defeat of its baseball team (see quot. 1888). Compare mud n.¹, -ville comb. form.The Cincinnati Reds' Class A minor league team based in Stockton, California (believed to be the site of the events that inspired Thayer's poem) is now named the Mudville Nine after Thayer's fictional team.
