Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek βότρυς , -ose suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek βότρυς cluster of grapes (see botryoid adj.) + -ose suffix1, after German botrytisch ( A. W. Eichler Blüthendiagramme I. (1875) 33).
Biology.
Shaped like a bunch of grapes; (in early use) bearing flowers in clusters or racemes, which develop successively from the base upward. Now chiefly Mycology (cf. botrytis n. 2).
