单词 botrytis
释义

botrytisn.

Brit. /bəˈtrʌɪtᵻs/, /bɒˈtrʌɪtᵻs/, U.S. /bəˈtraɪdᵻs/, /ˌbɑˈtraɪdᵻs/
Forms: 1600s botritis, 1600s– botrytis.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin botryītis, botrytis.
Etymology: < classical Latin botryītis (in post-classical Latin also botrytis) < Hellenistic Greek βοτρυῖτις ore or oxide of zinc < ancient Greek βότρυς cluster of grapes (see botryoid adj.) + -ῖτις -itis suffix. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Botrytis, genus name ( P. A. Micheli Nova plantarum genera iuxta Tournefortii methodum disposita (1729) 212; valid publication: C. H. Persoon 1794, in Neues Magazin für die Botanik 1 126). The mould is so called because it is characteristically found on clusters of grapes, and has clustered conidia which bear a resemblance to bunches of grapes.Compare the following earlier occurrence of the transliterated Greek noun in an English context:1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World II. xxxiv. x. 506 That [kind of Cadmia] which is more inward and hangeth downe from the coping and vauted roufe of the furnace, is the best: and in that respect, because it hangeth so as it were by clusters, they [sc. the Greeks] give it the name Botryitis [L. botryitis; Fr. Botriytis].
