Etymology: < Botswana (Setswana Botswana < bo- , class prefix forming place names + Tswana Tswana adj.), the name of a country in southern Africa + -an suffix. Compare Setswana Motswana member of a Tswana people, native or inhabitant of Botswana (see Motswana n.; plural Batswana Batswana n.). Compare slightly earlier Botswanian n. and also Botswanian adj.Before colonization, the region was inhabited by a number of Bantu, chiefly Tswana, peoples organized in several kingdoms. It first became a single political unit with the formation of the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland in 1885 ( < Bechuana n. ( < Setswana Batswana Batswana n.) + Land n.2). In 1966 it became an independent state as the Republic of Botswana.
