Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew mōšāḇ.
Etymology: < modern Hebrew mōšāḇ (in biblical Hebrew ‘settlement, colony’) < yašaḇ to sit, dwell.The terms moshav ovdim (plural moshve ovdim) and moshav shitufi (plural moshavim shitufiim), denoting particular kinds of moshavs, are occasionally found in English contexts.
In Israel: a village or settlement consisting of agricultural smallholdings worked partly on a cooperative and partly on an individual basis. Cf. kibbutz n.
