单词 pasteque
释义

pastequen.

Brit. /pasˈtɛk/, U.S. /pæsˈtɛk/
Forms: 1500s–1600s pateque, 1600s pastaique, 1600s pastique, 1800s pastec, 1800s patèque.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French pastèque, pateque.
Etymology: < Middle French, French pastèque /pastɛk/ (dated 1512 in Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch at baṭṭīḥa, though without exemplification; earlier in Old French as bodeke in the Bible commentator Rashi (late 11th cent.); 1619 as †pasteque ), †pateque (c1530) < Arabic baṭṭīḵ , colloquial form of biṭṭīḵ , probably < Syriac paṭṭīḥā (compare Hebrew ăḇaṭṭīaḥ (hapax legomenon in Numbers 11:5), Aramaic ăbaṭṭīḥā ). The Arabic word was also borrowed into other Romance languages and post-classical Latin; some forms show the Arabic prefixed article: compare Catalan albudeca (1252), †pasteca (16th cent.) watermelon, Spanish badea (1300 or earlier), albudeca (1537; < Catalan), bateca (1601–11 in an apparently isolated attestation) watermelon of inferior quality, Portuguese †pateca watermelon (1560; 1506–7 as batech ; now (rare) bateca ), post-classical Latin batheca watermelon (15th cent. in batheca arabica , 1562 in batheca indica ), Occitan pastèca watermelon. Compare also Dutch pateca (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598).The French, Occitan, and Catalan forms with medial -s- are perhaps alterations after French paste , Occitan pasta , Catalan pasta paste n.; in southern France a purée made from watermelons was frequently used in the preparation of various dishes.
Now rare.
