Forms: late Middle English pastare, 1700s paister, 1800s– paster.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: paste v., -er suffix1; French pasteyr, pastoier.
Etymology: In sense 1 either < paste v. + -er suffix1, or < Anglo-Norman pasteyr and Middle French pastoier (1261 in Old French as pastoieur ), Middle French (Normandy) pasteer (14th cent.) pastry-cook, pie-maker < paste paste n. + -ier -ier suffix; compare -er suffix2. In later senses < paste v. + -er suffix1.
1. A person who bakes bread; a baker. Cf. pasterer n. Obsolete.
