Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Portuguese. Or (ii) a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Portuguese morro; Spanish morro.

Etymology: Either < Portuguese morro (16th cent. in this sense), or < Spanish morro hill, mound (1493; 1825 in the passage translated in quot. 1826; also attested in Spanish in the sense ‘snout’ (1611 or earlier; compare morral n.)); further etymology uncertain.J. Corominas Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico (1981) suggests that the word is probably < *murr- , an unattested Romance base indicating displeasure (ultimately imitative in origin; perhaps related to the Indo-European base of murmur v.).
