Etymology: < Monterey, the name of a city and county in U.S. state of California.The city lies at the southern end of Monterey Bay, which was named in 1602 by the Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno in honour of the Count of Monte Rey, viceroy of Mexico. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mǫnterēi·) /mɒnteɪˈreɪ/, /mɒntə-/.
