Origin: A borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymon: Latin valentia.
Etymology: < classical Latin valentia (see valency n.; compare -ence suffix), frequently after German formations in -valenz. Compare French -valence . Compare valence n.2 3 and -valency comb. form.Formations are found from the second half of the 19th cent., apparently earliest in quantivalence n., earliest after German models. Compare earlier isolated borrowings or formations on words in -valent (see -valent comb. form), as equivalence n., prevalence n., omnivalence n. at omni- comb. form .
