Etymology: < way n.¹ (compare especially way n.¹ and int.¹ Phrases 6a(a)). Formations are often paired with a corresponding (and usually earlier) adverb in -ways comb. form.Earliest in Old English as the second element of an adverbial noun phrase with both elements in the accusative singular (compare α. forms at alway adv.). From the late 14th cent. onwards, compounds with way n.¹ as the second element are attested in adverbial use (compare anyway adv., no way adv. and the γ. forms at alway adv.), leading to the use of the second element as a combining form to form adverbs in the course of the 15th cent. (compare e.g. straightway adv., needway adv.). From this time on, the first element of such formations can be either a descriptive adjective (see sense 1a) or a noun (see sense 1b); these continue in the early modern period (compare e.g., with adjective, broadway adv., crossway adv. and, with noun, sideway adv.). Some of these adverb formations are subsequently also used as adjectives (see sense 2), earliest in the 17th cent.
