Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin modificandus ; Latin modificāre , -and suffix2.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin modificandus (4th cent.), gerundive of classical Latin modificāre (see modify v.; compare -and suffix2), or independently < classical Latin modificāre + -and suffix2.
Chiefly Grammar.
Something that is to be modified; the subject of modification.
