Etymology: < French plique à jour (1852 or earlier) < Middle French plicque piece of overlaid enamelwork (15th cent.; 1363 in esmail de plicque ; apparently aphetic < aplicque action of applying (1490; 1363 in esmail d'oplique , 1532 in esmail d'aplicque ) < appliquer applique v.¹) + à jour à jour adj. Compare also Middle French plite a jour (1379 or earlier denoting the same sort of enamelwork).

Enamelling.

A technique in which small areas of translucent enamel are fused into the spaces of a wire framework to give an effect similar to stained glass.
