Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pliolophus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pliolophus, genus name (R. Owen 1857, in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 14 55) < plio- plio- comb. form + ancient Greek λόϕος crest (see lopho- comb. form). Compare plioloph n.
Palaeontology.
A genus of extinct perissodactyl quadrupeds allied to tapirs and horses, known from remains of the Eocene epoch.

1883 Amer. Naturalist 17 870 In Europe, as in America, the Suessonian epoch ushers in the genus Coryphodon. Hyracotherium also appears..and Pliolophus.
1932 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) B. 221 437 Depéret has given it as his opinion, following Lydekker, that not only is Owen's genus Pliolophus not valid..but that there is hardly any specific difference between the two forms.
2002 Zool. Jrnl. Linnean Soc. 134 141 Pliolophus, the only early Eocene equid from Europe, is identified as the sister taxon to Protorohippus.
