Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mitchell.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < the surname Mitchell, perhaps (as suggested by W. J. Arkell: see quot. 1947) in the name of Humfrey Michell (d. 1598), Clerk or Surveyor of the Works at Windsor Castle in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
Now historical and rare.
A (usually square) paving stone, esp. of Purbeck stone; (in Mitchel stone) paving made from such stones.

1947 W. J. Arkell Oxf. Stone ii. 49 Humfrey Michell, clerk of the works at Windsor to Queen Elizabeth [I]..was probably the man who gave his name to the paving stones called Michels or Mitchels.
