Etymology: < arsen- (in arsenic n.) + -ite suffix¹.In sense 1 originally after French arsénite (1796 in the passage translated in quot. 1796, or earlier). In sense 2 after German Arsenit ( W. Haidinger Handbuch der bestimmenden Mineralogie (1845) 487).

1. Chemistry. A salt of arsenous acid; (a salt containing) any of various oxyanions or hydroxy anions of arsenic in which it has an oxidation state of +3. Cf. arsenate n.
