Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μισάνθρωπος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μισάνθρωπος (adjective) hating humankind, in Hellenistic Greek also spec. the name given to Timon of Athens in Plutarch's Lives ( Antonius 70) < μισο- miso- comb. form + ἄνθρωπος human being (see anthropo- comb. form). Compare classical Latin mīsanthrōpos (Cicero, of Timon), post-classical Latin misanthropus (5th cent.). Compare misanthrope n. and adj.
Now rare.
(A name given to) a person who displays characteristics reminiscent of the semi-legendary misanthrope Timon of Athens (also called Timon Misanthropos); a misanthrope.The character of Timon, originally known from Plutarch (see quot. 1579), was popularized by Shakespeare (see quot. a1616).
