geodesyn.

Forms:

α. 1500s–1800s geodesie, 1600s geodaesie, 1600s 1800s geodaesy, 1600s– geodesy, 1900s– geodoesy.

β. 1600s geodetia.

δ. 1800s– geodosy.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin geodaesia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin geodaesia (15th cent.) < ancient Greek γεωδαισία < Hellenistic Greek γεωδαιτης land surveyor (although this is apparently first attested later: see geodetic adj.) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare French géodésie (1644).In β. forms probably after post-classical Latin geodaeta or geodaeticus (for both, see geodetic n. and adj.); compare α. forms at geodesian n. In δ. forms ultimately after post-classical Latin geodosia (1540 or earlier); compare also Italian geodosia (1716 or earlier; apparently rare before 19th cent.) and Spanish geodosia (1843 or earlier); the motivation for this variant is unexplained.
Originally: the measuring or surveying of land (now historical and rare). Now chiefly: the branch of science and mathematics concerned with the precise measurement of the shape of the earth and of areas and positions on its surface, and with the spatial properties of the earth's gravitational field.
