Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: geodesy n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < geodesy n. + -ist suffix, after French †géodésiste (1752 or earlier), in turn probably after Russian geodezist (1716). Compare German (now rare) Geodesist (1769 or earlier; probably after Russian). Compare earlier geodesian n. and later geodete n.
An expert in geodesy; a geodetic surveyor.
